Mathematician May Have Just Solved The Mystery Of Missing Flight MH370

A mathematics professor may have solved the mystery of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which disappeared without trace last year with 239 people on board. 
Conspiracy theorists have suggested various outlandish theories including the idea that the flight was abducted by aliens. 

But the reality may be a little more prosaic, according to applied mathematician Dr. Goong Chen of Texas A&M University.

His computer models suggest that the flight entered a vertical dive over the Indian Ocean, entering the water cleanly and without breaking up.

The simulated crash solves some of the mysteries surrounding MH370 — such as the lack of debris and spilled oil on the surface.

Dr. Chen suggests that the plane’s body and wings sank rapidly — explaining the lack of an oil slick on the surface.

Dr. Chen says, “The true final moments of MH370 are likely to remain a mystery until someday when its black box is finally recovered and decoded.

“But forensics strongly supports that MH370 plunged into the ocean in a nosedive.”


Asteroid Armegeddon?...

Conspiracy theorists are convinced that a giant asteroid will hit Earth in September


Ah, conspiracy theorists. You've gotta love them.


As part of a training exercise for the US military, areas in the states of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado are being used to simulate different types of terrain for soldiers to participate in. Although the plans haven't been made available to the public, the increase in military activity in the region has sent bloggers, theorists and whack-jobs spiralling off into all sorts of outlandish theories about what's happening.

The prevailing theory is that the training exercise - known as Jade Helm - is actually a front for the US military's plan to invade Texas. In fact, that theory has become so widespread that the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, issued a statement warning Texans to "know their safety, constitutional rights, private property right and civil liberties will not be infringed."

However, there are also a good number of theories suggest that a massive asteroid is due to hit the Earth between September 22nd and September 28th, resulting in a post-apocalyptic scenario in that region - hence why all the army people are there, getting ready for the end of the world

Those same theorists believe that the asteroid was brought forth thanks to the Large Hadron Collider, which (in their words) meddled with the cosmic forces and dragged the asteroid out of its path. While some scientists have admitted that the LHC could cause a black hole to form, they have stated that there is no evidence that it can have an effect on the path that asteroids travel but hey, why should facts get in the way of a good conspiracy theory? Plenty of vloggers and bloggers have taken to the internet to give us the official, 100% true version of what's definitely happening. 

The growing concerns online has lead NASA to release a statement where they have had to tell people when the next asteroid is due to be anywhere near Earth, and it turns out we're safe for a few hundred years yet. 

That hasn't stopped people coming up with plenty of theories about what's going on, with one blogger saying that the end of the world is nigh because "the CERN logo is 666 - the sign of the beast - in a circle. The CERN collider looks like the all-seeing eye or stargaze we see so much of", and another on the site Whistleblower 800 has said that they've figured out exactly what's going on with the training exercise: "This (asteroid) is why the military is deploying Jade Helm this summer, because it may no longer be possible to cover it all up. Jade Helm is an insurance policy. If we make it to fall, JH will just be a training exercise". Of course, the military would never admit that, because it would cause complete anarchy, so that's why no one is talking about it of course.
Our theory? We thinks this is all just a promotional exercise for The X-Files.

NASA Gets Best View Yet of Mysterious Bright Spots on Ceres

NASA's Dawn spacecraft has snapped the best-ever images of the dwarf planet Ceres' bright spots, but the strange features still have researchers scratching their heads.

The new photos resolve the' bright spots on Ceres into numerous points of varying sizes. The brightest ones lie within a crater about 55 miles (90 kilometers) wide, researchers said. You can see a video tour of Ceres' strange white spots on Space.com that shows how the odd features have come into focus for Dawn over the last two months.

"The bright spots in this configuration make Ceres unique from anything we've seen before in the solar system. The science team is working to understand their source," Dawn principal investigator Chris Russell of UCLA said in a statement. "Reflection from ice is the leading candidate in my mind, but the team continues to consider alternate possibilities, such as salt." [More Photos of the Dwarf Planet Ceres]

Dawn captured the images this month from its second mapping orbit of Ceres, an orbit that lies about 2,700 miles (4,400 km) above the surface of the heavily cratered world. But the probe will soon get even closer to the dwarf planet — close enough, perhaps, to take the bright spots' measure at last.
On June 28, Dawn will begin spiraling down to an orbit with an altitude of 900 miles (1,450 km), finally getting there in early August. (It takes Dawn a while to get around because the probe is powered by superefficient but low-thrust ion engines.)

"With closer views from the new orbit and multiple view angles, we soon will be better able to determine the nature of this enigmatic phenomenon," Russell said in the same statement.

The $473 million Dawn mission launched in September 2007 to study Ceres and Vesta, the two largest objects in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Ceres is about 590 miles (950 km) wide, while Vesta's diameter is 330 miles (530 km).

Dawn orbited Vesta from July 2011 through September 2012, when it departed for Ceres. The spacecraft arrived at Ceres this past March, in the process becoming the first probe ever to circle two objects beyond the Earth-moon system, as well as the first to orbit a dwarf planet.

The new images from Dawn's second mapping orbit have helped highlight some of the differences between Ceres and Vesta. For example, while both objects have been heavily pockmarked by craters, Ceres bears more evidence of geological activity on its surface, such as flows and landslides, NASA officials said.

Dawn is scheduled to continue studying Ceres through June 2016. The probe will make its final observations of the dwarf planet from an extremely close-in orbit, eyeing Ceres from just 230 miles (375 km) away.

Why China wants to land a spacecraft on the mysterious far side of the moon

China appears to be planning a space mission to a place no nation has ever been — the far side of the moon.
The China National Space Administration (CNSA) currently plans to launch Chang'e 4, a craft that will carry the country's second lunar rover, in 2020. According to comments recently made by Wu Weiren, the Lunar Exploration Program's chief engineer, the rover will likely touch down on the side of the moon that faces away from Earth.
"We probably will choose a site on which it is more difficult to land and more technically challenging," Wu recently told the state broadcaster CCTV. "Other countries have chosen to land on the near side of the moon. Our next move probably will see some spacecraft land on the far side of the moon."
Since 2007, China's ambitious lunar program has already placed two probes in the moon's orbit and one lander on its surface. Putting a rover on the far side could provide new data on the moon's geologic history — and demonstrate the CNSA's growing expertise in and dominance of lunar exploration.

Though China began launching satellites and conducting other activities in space all the way back in the 1970s, the country's space agency has made its biggest strides since 2000, becoming the third nation to send astronauts into space in 2003. Since then, the CNSA has focused on a destination that NASA and other space agencies have mostly overlooked as of late: the moon.
In 2007, the CNSA sent its first spacecraft — named Chang'e 1, after the Chinese goddess of the moon — into lunar orbit. That was followed by the orbiter Chang'e 2 in 2010 and the lander Chang'e 3 in 2013, the latter of which brought a small rover (called Yutu) to the moon, and became the first craft to make a soft-landing there since the 1970s.

The next few missions will go even further. Chang'e 5, to be launched in 2017, will collect a rock sample and launch it back up to an orbiter, in order to bring it back to Earth. (Confusingly, Chang'e 5 is launching before Chang'e 4 because the latter was originally built as a backup to Chang'e 3, then sat in storage for a few years and has since been retrofitted for the new mission.)
Plans call for Chang'e 4 to launch in 2020. Though Chang'e 3 successfully landed, mechanical problems prevented the rover it carried from traveling more than 100 meters. If all goes as planned, the new craft's rover will be able to gather much more data — and perhaps explore the moon's relatively unknown far side.

From Earth, we always see one side of the moon because it's tidally locked: it rotates at the same speed that it orbits us.
As a result, we know much less about the far side (calling it the "dark side," while a bit more poetic, isn't really accurate, because it gets just as much sunlight). And because there's no direct line of sight from the Earth to the far side, landing a craft there would require all communications to be routed through an orbiter before reaching the lander.
But as difficult as it sounds, a mission to the far side would yield plenty of rewarding data. Though the moon's entire surface has been extensively photographed by orbiting probes — starting with the USSR's Luna 3, in 1959, and currently by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter — no lander or rover has ever documented the far side up close.

We already know the near side of the moon is covered in dark spots, which are plains of basalt that formed after volcanoes erupted billions of years ago and their lava cooled.
The far side is different: it has few dark spots and lots of craters, though scientists don't fully understand why. It may be that underneath its surface, there were never as many volcanoes, but that explanation still isn't fully proven. Chang'e 4 might tell us more, by collecting data on the rock that covers the far side's surface.
Depending on where the rover is sent, it could also provide some information on the moon's interior. The far side features the giant South Pole–Aitken basin — a huge crater in which the crust might be so thin that mantle rock peeks through. Data on this rock could help scientists better understand the layers that make up the moon.

Finally, there's some speculation that China might be interested in visiting the moon's far side and conducting sample-return missions for an entirely different purpose: harvesting helium-3, an isotope of helium that could someday be used for both nuclear weapons and energy production.
The isotope is much more abundant on the moon than on Earth, where it's extremely rare. And the moon's far side is believed to have the highest concentrations of it, because it's exposed to much more solar wind, which deposits helium-3 in the first place.
It's not certain that this is China's goal. In order to get usable quantities of helium-3, a craft would need to harvest way more rock than Chang'e 5 will be capable of doing. The CNSA, meanwhile, has never explicitly said that it's planning on mining helium-3.
Still, Ouyang Ziyuan, chief scientist of CNSA's Lunar Exploration Program, has previously mentioned helium-3 as a long-term potential benefit of the Chang'e program. It's conceivable that one reason for returning lunar samples and exploring the moon's far side is to collect initial data needed for this sort of ambitious extraction project.
